IERE is here to provide leading research on a variety of issues surrounding environmental policy, the intersection of sustainability and business practices, environmental product labeling, energy independence, and much more. Below is a sampling of some of our research topics and papers. Please visit our Technical Research page to read about our work in that area.
- Environmental Product Labeling
- Roadmap to EPDs in the USA
- Outlook for Type III Ecolabels in the US
- Status and Opportunities to Support Product Category Rules and Environmental Product Declarations in the United States
This research paper describes how Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are sweeping the globe and being required by governments. By exploring the US LCA infrastructure and resources in all sectors needed to support a national program, this paper recommends specific actions to be taken by the federal government. Given the growing number of eco-labels on the market, it's difficult to know what each one means and which ones you can trust. More information on eco-labels can be found though Consumer Report's Greener Choices site. Moreover, when developing the Product Category Rules upon which EPDs are based, products must share the same scope for LCA data to be comparable. IERE organized a group of industry representatives to develop a scoping document with a goal of providing a basis for ongoing and new studies. Read the scoping document here:
